Sources of Soy Protein

  • Tofu

Also called soybean curd, tofu is a very popular smooth, soft soy product. It is prepared by curdling hot soymilk with a coagulant. It has a nice mild flavor and a high content of B vitamins and protein. There are two primary kinds of tofu – silken tofu and water-packed tofu.

  • Silken tofu: It is available in many forms namely soft, reduced-fat, firm, and extra-firm. This kind of tofu is generally used in blended and pureed dishes.
  • Water-packed tofu: It is available in many forms namely soft, firm, and extra-firm. This kind of tofu is generally used in soups, grills, and stir fry dishes.
  • Whole Soybeans

When soybeans get matured, they become dry and hard, just like any other legume. The matured soybeans are yellow, brown, or black in color. Whole soybeans are rich in dietary fiber and protein and can be used in the preparation of soups, stews, and sauces. They can also be roasted and used as a healthy snack.

  • Tempeh

The very tasteful tempeh is a tender, chunky soy product. It is produced by mixing whole soybeans with another grain like millet or rice and fermenting and pressing it into a bar. The end product has a nutty, smoky flavor and can be cooked by slicing, marinating, and grilling.

  • Soy Nuts

Soy nuts are basically produced by soaking whole soybeans in water and then baking them until perfectly browned. These nuts come in a wide range of amazing flavors. They have a similar texture to that of peanuts and are rich in isoflavones and proteins.

  • Soymilk

Soymilk is produced when well-soaked soybeans are grounded into a fine paste and strained thoroughly. A huge population of the society is now switching from the traditional cow and buffalo milk to the nutritious soymilk. It is also an excellent substitute for lactose-intolerant people. Unfortified soy milk is rich in B vitamins and soy protein. Soymilk is available in the form of liquid as well as powder. You can add soymilk to your bowl of muesli and oatmeal or bake it into muffins and cakes.

  • Miso

Containing a high quantity of sodium, Miso is a salty rich soy paste, used primarily in preparing Japanese delicacies. The Japanese use miso to make soups and add flavor to various marinades, dressings, sauces, and glazes for all grilled food items. Miso paste can be refrigerated and stored for a long period of time.
