Product Use

Production & Sourcing

Gentian is a perennial herb that is native to the mountains of central and southern Europe. It is commonly found growing wild in alpine meadows, forests, and rocky areas. Gentian is cultivated in various parts of Europe and Asia, primarily in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and China. The production of Gentian begins with the cultivation of the plant, which is done through sowing seeds or by dividing and transplanting root segments. The ideal growing conditions for Gentian include full sun exposure and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. The plant takes 2-3 years to reach maturity and is harvested in late summer or early fall when the roots are at their most potent.Once harvested, the roots are washed, dried, and then roasted to enhance their bitter flavor and increase their shelf life. The dried roots are then ground to produce a fine powder, which is the most commonly used form of Gentian.
