Commonly known as bearberry, kinnikinnick, bear grape, rock berry, and sandberry, it is a perennial shrub. Belonging to the family of Arctostaphylos, it is known popularly for its rich content of antioxidants. Its major active components are hydroquinone, arbutin, and methyl arbutin. It also contains steroid, sitosterol, and triterpenoids, such as amyrin, betulinic acid, lupeol, oleanolic acid taraxenol, ursolic acid, and uvaol. Since it has a number of health benefits, it is used to make many ayurvedic medicines.
