Also known as Asian ginseng and Chinese ginseng, Korean ginseng belongs to the family of Araliaceae. It is native to Asian countries. Ginsenosides, which are also called ginseng saponins are the major active components of ginseng root. The root of this plant is a good source of antioxidants and is rich in vitamins and minerals. It may enhance the immune system and promote brain health. It has long been used in Ayurveda.

Major componentsPolysaccharides (acidic polysaccharides known as ginsenan), phenolic compounds (including elemicin and dauricine) [1]. Amino acids including arginine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine, leucine, alanine, proline, lysine, serine, threonine, proline, phenylalanine, isoleucine, and tyrosine are highly accumulated; volatile oil in ginseng comprises aldehydes, heterocycles, sesquiterpenoids (hexadecanoic acid (32.28 %) and falcarinol (29.64 %)), fatty acids, fatty acid ester compounds, and alkane hydrocarbons; Polyacetylene; Ginseng contains more than 12 alkaloids, including adenosine, spermine, and choline. Ginseng also contains various trace elements, vitamins, and enzymes [2].
Other constituentsFlavonoid (Kaempferol), and alkaloids (fumarine and girinimbi), three β-carboline alkaloids were isolated from Ginseng root, fatty acids, and mineral oils [1].
