Also known as Holy thistle, Legalon, Marian thistle, Mary thistle, Silibinin, Silybin, Silymarin, and St Mary thistle, belongs to the family Asteraceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe. Silibinin, silychristin, and silidianin are the three major active components that are collectively called silymarin present in seeds of milk thistle. It is a good source of potent antioxidants that provides protection against free radicals. Intake of milk thistle has several health benefits on the gut, skin, bone, and liver health.
