Production & Sourcing

Blackcurrants, also known as Ribes nigrum, are small, dark purple berries that are native to Europe and parts of Asia. They are a popular and versatile fruit, prized for their unique flavor and nutritional value. Blackcurrants are primarily grown in temperate regions, with major producers including countries such as Poland, Russia, Ukraine, France, and the United Kingdom. Blackcurrants are a deciduous shrub that grows best in cool climates with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. They are typically propagated through cuttings and require regular pruning to maintain their productivity. The plant begins to produce berries after 2-3 years and has a lifespan of 10-12 years. The harvesting of blackcurrants is typically done by hand to ensure the delicate berries are not damaged. Once harvested, the berries are quickly processed to prevent spoilage.
