Production & Sourcing

Bilberry, also known as European blueberry or huckleberry, is a small, dark blue-purple fruit that grows on a perennial shrub native to Northern Europe and North America. It is closely related to other berries, such as blueberries, cranberries, and huckleberries. With its rich flavor and numerous health benefits, bilberry has been used in traditional medicine and cuisines for centuries. Bilberries are mostly grown in the wild, as they require specific conditions to thrive. They prefer acidic, nutrient-rich, and well-drained soil, along with cool temperatures and partial shade. In commercial production, they are usually grown in mountainous or hilly regions of Europe, Northwest Asia, and North America.
The harvesting season for bilberries typically runs from mid-July to early September, depending on the location. The berries are hand-picked and carefully separated from the branches to avoid damage. Due to their delicate nature, they are usually transported in small amounts to avoid bruising.
