Alfalfa is also called as Lucerne, buffalo herb, California clover. Its a perennial flowering plant of Family Fabacea, an important forage crop which superficially resembles clover. Its leaflets are elongated, clusters of small purple flowers followed by fruits are there. This has been used as a traditional herbal medicine in China, Turkey, India, etc. Saponins, phytoestrogens, flavonoids coumarins, amino acids, alkaloids, vitamins, phytosterols, digestive enzymes and terpenes constitute major classes of phytoconstituents of this plant.
