Product Use

Production & Sourcing

Alfalfa, scientifically known as Medicago sativa, is a cool-season perennial legume that is widely used as a forage crop. It is native to central Asia and was introduced to the United States in the 1800s. Today, alfalfa is cultivated in many countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and many parts of Europe.

Alfalfa is primarily grown for its high-quality forage, but it is also utilized for its health benefits and edible properties. It is a versatile crop that can be grown in a wide range of soils and climatic conditions. The ideal soils for alfalfa cultivation are deep, well-drained, and have a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. It is usually sown in the spring, but can also be sown in the fall in warmer regions. The plant requires a minimum rainfall of 20 inches per year, and it can withstand mild drought conditions. Alfalfa is a nitrogen-fixing crop, which means it can convert atmospheric nitrogen to a usable form for soil fertility. This makes it a valuable rotation crop for farmers.
