It is also called the black tang, rockweed, bladder fucus, sea oak, cut weed. It is a brown algae. It is edible. It is green-brown in color. Iodine, alginic acid, and fucoidan are the three main active constituents. It also contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, minerals, trace metals, phenolics, phloroglucinol, fucophorethols, phlorotannins, mucopolysaccharides, lipids, and sulphuryl-, sulphonyl- and phosphoryl-glycosyl ester diglycerides. It contains a high amount of antioxidants. It may have antibacterial and anticoagulant properties.
