Also known as the Barbados cherry, the West Indian cherry belongs to the family Malpighiaceae. It is native to South America, Southern Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Bioflavonoids are the major active components present in this cherry. This cherry is very nutritive, it is a rich source of pectin, vitamin-like vitamin C, carotenoid, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and minerals like iron, calcium, and phosphorus. These cherries are a good source of antioxidants that stabilize the unstable free radicles and reduce their harmful effect. Intake of these fruits is good for the immune system, brain, and skin health.
