Pineapple is a herbaceous perennial that belongs to the family Bromeliaceae. It has short stock, waxy leaves and it produces a single fruit in its whole lifetime. Bromelain is the major active component of pineapple and it is a proteolytic enzyme. It is rich in citric acid, malic acid, high fiber, Vitamins A, B, and C, sugar, fatty acid. It also contains iodine, magnesium, manganese, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, sulfur. It has a high amount of antioxidants which are flavonoids and phenolic acids. It may help to boost immunity and help indigestion.
