          Millet belongs to the family Poaceae.  Ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid are the major active components present in these grains. Intake of these grains is nutritious for health as it is a good source of carbohydrate, protein, and dietary fiber. Millet grains are also a good source of vitamin A and B, and also contain potassium and phosphorus-like minerals. These grains are also a good source of antioxidants .

          Millets are coarse grains or it can be considered as a group of highly variable small-seeded grasses, that is widely grown around the world as cereal crops or grains for human food and fodder. These are highly nutritious and are rich in minerals, proteins, vitamins, and fibres.

          Millets are available in different sizes and shapes. It can be divided into two broad categories: pearl millet and small millets. Besides these, there are many other kinds as well. Proso millet is also kind of its own. Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum, P.typhoides, P.tyhpideum, P.americanum) is the most widely grown of all millets. It is also known as bajra, cumbu, bulrush millet, babala, dukhn, gero, sajje, sanio or souna. Finger millet (Eleusine coracana), known as ragi in India, is another important staple food in Eastern Africa and in India, Nepal. Proso or Common millet (Panicum miliaceum) is grown in temperate climates. It is widely cultivated in Australia, the Russian Federation, the United States, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Argentina.

          Various types of millet extract provide many nutrients. It is a rich source of protein, dietary fiber, several B vitamins, and numerous dietary minerals.
