Product Use

Production & Sourcing

Cascara Sagrada, also known as sacred or holy bark, is the dried bark of the Rhamnus purshiana tree, which mainly grows in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The tree can take up to 20 to 30 years to mature and has a lifespan of approximately 150 years. The bark is harvested by stripping it from the tree in the spring or summer months when the sap is running, and then it is left to dry for one to two years before it is ready for processing. The majority of Cascara Sagrada production takes place in the Pacific Northwest, particularly in Oregon and Washington state. However, there are also small-scale producers in California and British Columbia. The bark is only harvested from wild trees, and efforts are made to ensure sustainable harvesting by limiting the amount of bark that can be taken from each tree and allowing the trees to reach maturity before harvesting.
