Production & Sourcing

Zinc oxide is a mineral compound made up of zinc and oxygen. It is naturally found in the earth's crust and can be mined as a mineral ore called zincite. However, most of the zinc oxide used in various industries is produced synthetically through the oxidation of zinc metal.
The main process for producing zinc oxide is called the French or indirect process. This involves heating zinc metal, in the form of impure zinc oxide or zinc-containing ores, in a furnace to vaporize the zinc. The vapor is then oxidized by air forming zinc oxide which can then be collected and purified.
Another method for producing zinc oxide is the American or direct process. This involves the oxidation of zinc in a furnace using air and natural gas as the source of heat. The zinc is melted at high temperatures and then vaporized before being oxidized to form zinc oxide.
Sourcing of zinc oxide is mainly from zinc ore deposits located in Australia, China, Peru, Mexico, and the United States. It is also a byproduct of the production of other metals such as lead, copper, and gold.
