Production & Sourcing

Stoneroot is a perennial herbaceous plant that is native to North America. Its scientific name is Collinsonia canadensis and it belongs to the mint family. It is also known by various other names such as hardhack, horseweed, and ox-balm. Stoneroot has a thick, woody rhizomatous root system that gives it its name. The roots of the plant are used for medicinal purposes and have a distinct pungent aroma.
Stoneroot is primarily grown in the eastern United States, particularly in the Appalachian region. The plant thrives in shady and damp areas, and can also be found in wooded areas and along streams and creeks. It can be propagated through its rhizomes, which are dug up and divided in the fall. The plant can also grow from seed, but it takes several years for the roots to mature.
Stoneroot has been traditionally gathered by wildcrafters, who harvest the plant from its natural habitat. However, due to overharvesting in the wild, many suppliers now cultivate stoneroot on farms to ensure sustainable sourcing. These farms typically follow organic farming practices to maintain the purity and quality of the plant.
