Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is a deciduous, woody shrub native to northeastern Asia, particularly found in Russia, China, Korea, and Japan. It belongs to the Araliaceae (ginseng) family and thrives in temperate forests with well-drained soils. Unlike true ginseng (Panax species), Siberian ginseng contains eleutherosides, bioactive compounds known for their adaptogenic, immune-boosting, and energy-enhancing properties. Traditionally used in Chinese and Russian herbal medicine, it has been valued for reducing fatigue, improving stamina, and supporting stress resilience.
Today, Russia and China are the largest producers of Siberian ginseng, where it is cultivated and also harvested from the wild for medicinal use. This hardy shrub grows between 2–3 meters (6–10 feet) in height, featuring spiky branches, palmate leaves, and small purple-black berries.
The harvesting season for Siberian ginseng falls between September and October, when its roots reach peak potency. The roots are manually harvested, cleaned, and either air-dried for powdered supplements or extracted into tinctures and liquid extracts. Siberian ginseng is widely used in dietary supplements, energy drinks, traditional herbal medicine, and functional foods for its stress-reducing, endurance-enhancing, and cognitive-supporting effects.
